About This Episode:

“My affirmation cannot come from other people or I would have quit so long ago because nobody sees what it takes."

So often in life we as women can feel like we are being defined by the roles that we play, so we begin to search for our true identity. In this episode, I am talking with my friend and director of Tattered Tiara’s about the struggles we face as women to be uniquely who have been created to be. In this candid conversation, Kathleen shares her battle with mental illness following the birth of her second son and how that was the catalyst for her becoming an advocate for women suffering from mental health issues. We also talk about the challenge women face in leadership and trap that we can easily fall into when we look for our identity in what we do instead of who we are.

Kathleen Van Engen is the executive director of the teenage girls organization, Tattered Tiaras. Kathleen is passionate about the advancement of young girls in positions of leadership and influence. Tattered Tiaras offers supports for teen girls in the areas of identity, mental health, and leadership. As a soon to be mom of ironically, 3 boys, Kathleen has been navigating the balance of several important roles; wife, mom, and entrepreneur. Throw into the mix a 2 year battle with postpartum depression and anxiety, Kathleen has also developed a passion for mental health and educating fellow strugglers along the way of how to keep dreaming during difficult seasons.

'You need to walk in the legacy you were born into.'

In this episode of The Couragecast, Naomi and I chat about the journey she has been on to pursue her legacy as a musician and singer-songwriter in Jamaica. One of her biggest challenges has been pushing herself forward even though she had everything she needed to start her career. As a multi potentialite, she felt a pull towards different areas of media and communication.

Naomi Cowan; a multi-disciplinary artist, has worked in the spotlight & behind the scenes as a vocalist, songwriter, media producer & television presenter for over 10 years. She was raised in the entertainment industry under the mentorship of her parents; impresario Tommy Cowan, OD and vocalist Dr. Carlene Davis- Cowan, OD. Tommy Cowan is well known for his involvement in Bob Marley’s career. Her mother, Carlene Davis a Canadian-Jamaican who is recognized by the music industry for her international success as a vocalist and community builder.

Naomi kickstarts her musical journey by releasing a tribute to reggae music in 2017
with her new single; ‘ThingsYou SayYou Love’ originally performed by The Jamaicans an award-winning rocksteady quartet from the 1960’s. 2017 marks the 50th year since the release of this iconic reggae song. The song was released late September with Zojak International Distribution, it can be found on all major digital platforms. Tommy Cowan co-wrote the song with Norris Weir. The song was also covered by British Reggae band UB40 in 2004. To further pay tribute to reggae music, Naomi collaborated with guitarist, vocalist, and producer from the international reggae-pop group ‘Magic!’, Mark Pelli on this project. Mark produced the track with Naomi and is featured as a guest vocalist. Mark is co-writer and producer of many award-winning and Billboard chart-topping songs including the group’s infectious single ‘Rude’.

24 | Back At Start

WITH ANDREA CRISP

AndreaCrisp-Couragecast1-Itunes.jpg

'Don't be afraid to start over. It's a chance to build something better.' Andrea Crisp

Have you ever sat by and watched someone else celebrate a success but secretly wished that it was you instead of them? I think we all have. In this week's minisode, I'll walk you step by step through the process of standing by your friend when they succeed and all you want to do is lick your wounds. Comparison is the breeding ground for mediocrity and as long as you are stuck in the comparison trap, you will not be able to move forward with your own life.

23 | Belonging With Greg Sebell

WITH GREG SEBELL

SEBELL.4189.jpg

About This Episode:

'I would rather be significant in people’s lives in the ways that are unseen than just have a platform.' - SEBELL

In this episode of The Couragecast, I'm excited to share my very first conversation with a male guest. In this episode singer-songwriter, Greg Sebell shares the in's and out's of a life on the road, and how after seven years he will be back on tour with brand new music. He explains that life as a musician is not always easy and how this year he hit a wall and caused him to diversify his talents and his time.

[ SEBELL ] is a two-time Juno Award Winner (Canada’s Grammy). The indie-pop artist was named by Entertainment Tonight as a “Canadian To Watch” after releasing a Billboard Top 10 hit "Till The Sun Burns Out”, which broke Top 40 Canadian radio in just over a week and a half. [ SEBELL ] followed that success with, "Promiseland", which debuted on Spotify's Canadian Viral chart at #1, and later a remix of the same song by STINT (Banks, Gallant, Demi Lovato), which reached #3 on the Hype Machine global remix chart.

While the name [SEBELL] may sound new, the artist behind it is no stranger to music. He has previously released multiple albums under his given name, Greg Sczebel. He has won the coveted John Lennon Songwriting contest twice, took top honour at the Billboard World Song Contest and nabbed a Western Canadian Music award.

As [SEBELL], he has been nominated for 2 Canadian Indie Awards (Pop Artist of the Year, Pop Song of the Year) and his song, "See Through the Heart" was featured in its entirety on NBC’s Saving Hope. More recently his song "Darkside" aired in the final season of MTV's Teen Wolf.

Calling Los Angeles, Nashville, Toronto and Vancouver home (he has belongings in storage in every city), [SEBELL] has lived a nomadic life for the past couple years, working on his upcoming release "Songs For Flight Delays" - the  follow-up EP to his self-titled album, featuring the new single, "FOMY (Fear Of Missing You)" along with 5 other new songs.
